AVENGERS #33: Cap Wears the Velcro Suit

Gee, Stan, heavy handed writing much?

AVENGERS #32

By issue 32, Hank Pym is already an emotional wreck, which he consistently portrayed as from here on out. It’s unusual in comics (and unheard of in DC comics) for characterization to be so consistent. Batman has gone from swashbuckler to brooder and back again. Superman’s been a naïve boy scout as well as a strong, decisive role model. Cap has been a confused man-out-of-time and a supremely confident world leader. But Hank’s always been messed up. In this panel, he’s downright weepy.

A thoroughly forgettable issue with a great title…

AVENGERS #30: Black Widow Used to Look Like Black Canary

first black widow
She may be an original movie Avenger, but it took 30 issues before Black Widow became an official ally of the team—by dating Hawkeye.

AVENGERS #29: Wasp is Too Fat

Reading these over again, I’m amazed at how sexist Stan Lee was. All the women seem to do is sew and get knocked out. Here, Wasp is beaten up by a tree.

AVENGERS #28

the collector
Their first battle against The collector (who reappeared during the George Perez era in #174, in what was basically a better-thought-out version of this same story). Ant-Man had already become Giant Man, and now, for no apparent reason, he becomes Goliath. This is also the issue where Pym first began to have health problems related to using his powers.

AVENGERS #27

While fighting The Beetle, one of Marvel’s lamer villains, Hawkeye breaks the fourth wall by referring to a “no prize”—these were letters given out by Marvel editors to readers who point out errors in Marvel comics.

AVENGERS #26

boobs
In this issue, Tony Stark invents a new “transistorized” voice-recognition system. And we learn that Hawkeye is a luddite.

Finally, some actual teamwork!
