FANTASTIC FOUR #136-137

IMG_0429

Now this is more like it.  Medusa can’t stand rock and roll!  A street gang based on Marlon Brando’s The Wild One!  And The Shaper of Worlds!

It’s actually all very silly and stupid, but it’s also kind of fun.  Again, Gerry Conway’s scripts were generally bad, so this one being as not-bad as it was was a breath of fresh air.

ANOTHER REASON WHY RACHEL RISING IS GREAT

You should be buying this comic.

COSPLAY OF THE DAY

AVENGERS #127

Mutants can be bigots, too.  Especially the hotheaded Pietro.  He’s consistently been portrayed this way, too.  See especially Peter David’s writing in early issues of X-Factor.  Great, great stuff–best Quicksilver comics ever.

Note: This issue was continued in Fantastic Four #150.  Unfortunately, I started blogging on F4 a month after I started on Avengers, and I haven’t been able to catch up yet.  So, we won’t be tying them together.  Anyway, this panel speaks for itself.  No need for continuity.

FANTASTIC FOUR #134-135

IMG_0423 IMG_0425

Ostensibly, these were two issues about Gideon and Dragon Man, but the story (a) doesn’t make a lot of sense; and (b) is boring.

Gerry Conway is, in my opinion, one of the worst Fantastic Four writers of the 1970s.  These issues are great examples of why.

Anyway, Franklin is still weird and Alicia is still missing Ben.  All the women in the FF comics seem to do is either get kidnapped or miss their men.  Or both.

Except for Medusa, who is a boss.

AVENGERS #126: Captain America Can’t Think In Libraries

Cap’s cynicism from his own title starts to show up in The Avengers…Soon, he would become Nomad: Man Without a Country–an idea also created by Steve Englehart, who was writing both titles.  Later he would even create West Coast Avengers.  Truly, he was the Brian Michael Bendis of his day.  And yet, he seems to be entirely forgotten these days.

FANTASTIC FOUR #133

IMG_0421
IMG_0419The first issue of Gerry Conway’s run on F4 was probably one of his best. “Thundra At Dawn” was a done-in-one slugfest between Thing and Thundra, a precursor to all kinds of great comics–like the one where Thing boxed Champion.

Lots of fun.  Terrific issue.  Even Hulk got funny screen time.

Not enough comics are just plain silly fun anymore.

COSPLAY OF THE DAY

FANTASTIC FOUR #129-132

IMG_0403
Crystal went back to her own people.  Johnny was sad.  So Johnny vowed to rejoin her.
IMG_0405
Franklin Richards continued to look creepy and have some sort of power set.  IMG_0409
Johnny arrived at Attillan, the hidden city of the Inhumans, to learn that Crystal was banging Quicksilver. This made Johnny even more sad. But a new costume did help him feel a little better.

And really, it was Reed who had it the worst. In the first real concrete signs of their fragmenting relationship, Sue quit the team.  But us fans got to see Medusa round out the F4–a truly strong woman who would never, ever be treated like a damsel in distress.
