AVENGERS #203

Manlove!

Dave Michelinie and Carmine Infantino team up for what is truly a terrible comic book.  Beast and Wonder Man go on an adventure to fight some monsters that look like they were designed and drawn in five minutes, and the story seems vaguely based on something between C.H.U.D. and The Howling.

Between #s 202 and 212 there were a lot of fill-ins and some truly bad art by some generally reputable artists.  There was only one truly great issue during this period, but it happens to be one of my all-time favorite “old order changeth” issues: #211.

At least we go the above bro love picture.

SUPERMAN: FOR TOMORROW PART 11 (Superman #214)

 superman for tomorrow
Superman realizes that creating Eden was not enough for mankind.  He now believes that nobody can—or should—create paradise.  Or is this just a retroactive justification for refusing to cure Father Leone’s cancer?

SUPERMAN: FOR TOMORROW PART 10 (Superman #213)

Lois and the vanished one million are not happy living in Superman’s utopia.  Again, the parallel is to Adam and Eve wanting more than God gave them in the Garden of Eden.

FANTASTIC FOUR #218

Since Bill Mantlo is filling in on writing chores after Wolfman’s abrupt departure as both writer and editor, it makes sense that there’s a Spidey crossover.  This issue finished a story that started in Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man #42, a series on which Mantlo was a regular writer.

AVENGERS #202

I like David Michelinie as a writer, but the script in this issue is unusually stilted.  It reads like old Roy Thomas dialog.

Other than that, a perfectly average issue.

AVENGERS #201

inside the helmet

I think this was one of the first “inside the armor” shots of Iron Man.  At least, it was the first one in The Avengers.  Avengers #201 also featured a Jarvis backup feature that was serviceable but not groundbreaking.  I think Marvel was trying to turn Jarvis into a bigger character, like Batman’s Alfred, but they never really gave Jarvis all that much to do.  He’d have a few panels here or there, but never with enough regularity or consistency that he really mattered as a character.

Then, of course, they killed him and turned him into a computer.  Then he was revived again but not really put to good use.

FANTASTIC FOUR #217

H.E.R.B.I.E. gets possessed and then destroys himself to save the F4.  Great story by Bill Mantlo, and, of course, great John Byrne art.
