HAPPY BIRTHDAY M.O.D.O.K!

IMG_1133

Tales of Suspense #93 hit the stands on June 1, 1967.  The lead story was about Iron Man.  But the second feature was a Cap story titled “Into the Jaws of A.I.M.” which featured a stubby-limbed bobble head knowns as Mobile Organism Designed Only for Killing.  He immediately replaced Arnim Zola as the weirdest looking Cap villain of all time, and has held that record ever since.

There have been many versions of MODOK through history.  My personal favorites are the Elvis MODOKs from Nextwave…

…and my mug.

I drink out of MODOK’s head every day!  And finally….

THE TOP TEN MARK GRUENWALD COMICS

The late Mark Gruenwald was an unsung workhorse for Marvel in the 1980s and 90s.  While he probably had his biggest influence as an editor, he was also known for stepping in and doing great fill-in issues as well as extended runs on some of Marvel’s best known characters, and was famous for having an encyclopedic knowledge of continuity.  Kind of like DC’s Geoff Johns or the current Brian Michael Bendis.

He also created the updated Serpent Society—including new members Anaconda and Diamondback among others, Flag-Smasher, Jack O’ Lantern, the villain Crossbones, and many other cool characters, before dying way too young of a heart attack.

Nobody talks about him anymore, but if you’re looking for some fun books that typify the late ‘80s/early ‘90s—widely considered a peak in the quality of Marvel comics—check out this top 10 after the break.

THE SUPERFICIAL AVENGERS

There are Secret Avengers.  There’s the original Avengers.  The New ones.  Now, there’s Uncanny Avengers.
But why not a Superficial Avengers team?  One based totally on how cool, wild and crazy the character looks?  And no other criteria.  The hero doesn’t have to make sense or be well thought out.  S/he just has to look cool.
Himbos and bimbos.
Here’s who I’d put on that team:
Ghost Rider-Original Version, the red armored version of Ant Man, Jessica Drew Spider Woman,
Ariel (Kitty Pryde) ’cause she knows she’s fabulous, Deathlok, Beta Ray Bill,

Madrox (X-Factor version), War Machine, Valkyrie (original version),

Flash Thompson Venom, Frankenpunisher, and the red-sash Ms. Marvel,
Psylocke, Astonishing Cyclops,
And every team needs a set of good villains.  I think the most interesting looking Marvel villains are…
M.O.D.O.K., Carnage, and The Orb,
Fin Fang Foom (without the purple underwear), Ultron,
The Mindless Ones on skateboards (from NextWave), the Mindless One,
Cyclops Phoenix, Shadowland Daredevil, and Danger from Astonishing X-Men
