DAREDEVIL #70-80

IMG_3433

Look at this beautiful panel.  Gene Colan is wizard.

Sadly, Gerry Conway’s writing…Isn’t.  It isn’t terrible, but it’s not great.  There’s no real sense of Daredevil as a character.  Half the time he’s a street fighting badass with a dark rogues gallery that has its roots in the underground and organized crime.  And he’s a hard-boiled lawyer as well.  But the rest of the time he’s pining away like a teenager:

Matt’s always been a romantic, but here he’s basically Peter Parker as an adult.  And by this time, even Peter Parker had grown up and was in a long-term relationship with Gwen Stacy.

There’s so many cool elements here, but it just isn’t gelling.  And there’s still a long way to go with Conway’s run.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GHOST RIDER!

Ghost Rider by Bernie Wrightson

Marvel Spotlight #72, with an August 1972 cover date, hit the stands today. The character was created by Silver Age author Gary Friedrich, with artist Mike Ploog. Friedrich recently sued Marvel for some of the profits from the horrible Ghost Rider movies. Naturally, he lost under well-established work-for-hire principles. The truly sad part, though, is that Disney has countersued him and bankrupted him for illegally marketing his own Ghost Rider materials.

I’m not taking Friedrich’s side here. I understand that when a publisher pays you to create something, they own it. And I understand that he can’t go around capitalizing on the character. But this seems extreme to me. Seems like Marvel/Disney could let the dude make a little money off of being the creator of their intellectual property.

Anyway, you can read it about it lots of places, but a particularly pro-Gary article is here.

And here’s a page from his first appearance:

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #59-61

Kingpin brainwashes Captain Stacy, and Spidey saves the day.  These are the roots of the Spider-Man/Stacy relationship, which becomes about as tight as Commissioner Gordon and Batman’s.  Actually, Spidey’s arguably even more open with Stacy.

DAREDEVIL #69

DAREDEVIL #69

First appearance of The Thunderbolts.  The black street gang, not the red horrible comic by Daniel Way.

Also, the first time Daredevil meets Black Panther.  And there’s pretty much nothing better than Gene Colan drawing Black Panther.

I noticed: BP and DD may be the only Marvel heroes with a single colored costume.

Karen’s in L.A. trying to be an actress, and she uses Daredevil to get the part.  She was always a user.
